When Graham Reid Scored in 3-2 Win Over India at the 1990 Lahore World Cup!
Graham Reid has driven Indian men’s hockey to new heights that culminated in the national side winning the Olympic bronze medal at Tokyo in 2021 after a hiatus of 41 years. The man in the hot seat would be expected to guide India to a podium finish in the 15th World Cup at Bhubaneshwar and Rourkela.
As a player Graham Reid knows what it is all about playing in the World Cup. Reid played his part in Australia winning the bronze medal at the 1990 Lahore World Cup. The current Indian men’s team coach scored Australia’s first goal in their 4-1 win over Argentina in their tournament opener – although he did not find his name on the scoresheet in Australia’s 3-1 and 3-0 wins over France and Soviet Union respectively. It was Reid who producer the match-winner in their hard-fought 3-2 victory over India – a contest where fortunes fluctuated. Australia topped Pool A with a solitary goal win over the Netherlands.
Australia lost to hosts Pakistan 1-2 in the semifinals and went on to overcome then West Germany 2-1 to land the bronze medal – Reid was part of a Kookaburras side that had its ranks the likes of former Indian women team coach Colin Batch, Greg Corbitt, Jay Stacy, Stephen Davies, and Micheal York.
