Statistical Talk: India-South Korea Men Head-to-Head

The Indian men’s hockey team lapped up their 4th consecutive win in the 9th Asian Champions Trophy at Hulunbuir beating South Korea 3-1. It was India’s 38th win 61 international encounters between the two teams. Both teams had first met at the 1958 Asian Games at Tokyo, where India won by the odd goal in three. In 61 head-to-head meetings South Korea have beaten India 11 times, while 12 games had ended in draws.

India had last locked horns with South Korea at the 2023 Asian Games at Hangzhou, where the Blueshirts prevailed over the red brigade 5-3. It is worth recalling that India have faced South Korea only six times in last five years – South Korea’s last win over India came five years back at the 2019 2019 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup final at Ipoh, where they out-duelled India 4-2 in a shootout after the regulation time scoreline read 1-1.

South Korea’s other notable wins against India came at the 2012 Olympics (won 4-1), 2006 World Cup (won 2-1), 2004 Olympics (won 5-2), 2000 Olympics (won 2-0), 2002 Champions Trophy (won 4-2), 2002 World Cup (won 2-1), and 1998 World Cup (won 4-3). In all 97 encounters, India have scored 375 goals, while Japan have scored 89 goals.
