Statistical Talk: India-China Men Head-to-Head Record

The Indian men’s hockey team’s hard-fought solitary goal win against a resilient China in the final of the 9th Asian Champions Trophy at Hulunbuir was their 18th win in 24 meetings over their Asian opponents – China have won three times against India and played out draws on three occasions as well.

Both India and China first met at the 1982 Asia Cup at Karachi, where the Blueshirts handed them a 7-0 heavy defeat. The last time China posted a win over India was eleven years back when India lost to them 0-2 at the 2013 Asian Champions Trophy at Kakamigahara. Effectively, India have always had the last laugh in their recent meetings until that 2013 defeat. The only two occasions when the Indian men lost to China was at the 2008 Double-leg 4-Nation Event at Perth, where they lost 1-2, and at the 2006 Doha Asian Games, where they had lost 2-3.

At the 2016 Asian Champions Trophy at Kuantan, Indian men crushed China 9-0 – it remains their biggest win against the red brigade. Both teams have settled for draws at the 2010 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup (1-1) at Ipoh, 2009 Asia Cup (2-2) at Kuantan, and 2008 Double-leg 4-Nation Event at Darwin (4-4).

In all 23 encounters, India have scored 79 goals and conceded 24 goals from their opponents.
