Statistical Rewind: India Will Look to Topple German Applecart
Teeming with confidence after their disciplined but hard-fought 1-0 win over Belgium, the Indian colts will take on six-time champions Germany in the semifinals of the 12th Junior Men’s Hockey World Cup at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneshwar on Friday.
India first met Germany (then West Germany) in the Junior Men’s Hockey World Cup at the 1982 edition in Kuala Lumpur, where India went down tamely 0-3. The Blueshirts next faced off against Germany at the 1985 edition in Vancouver where they again lost but this time around narrowly by 3-4.
India’s next meet-up against Germany in the Junior Men’s Hockey World Cup was at the 1997 edition in Milton Keynes, where India vanquished the European powerhouse 4-3 riding on an extra goal by Rajnish Mishra after both teams were locked 3-3 in regulation time. India had last locked horns with Germany at the 2001 edition in Hobart where they won 3-2 after comfortably leading 3-0 at half-time.
