Indian hockey is synonymous with men players who got married to women hockey players. The earliest memory of an Indian hockey couple that comes to mind is that of former Indian women’s hockey team captain, half-back and four-time Asian Games represented Rajbir Kaur, who was nicknamed ‘the Golden Girl’ – she got hitched to former Indian defender Gurmail Singh, who was a member of India’ gold-winning 1980 Moscow Olympics team.

Another famous hockey couple of the seventies and early eighties was former Indian captain and deep defender Surjit Singh, who married former international player Chanchal Kaur. How can one forget the Indian speedy right-winger Mukesh Kumar, who married former Indian women’s team forward Nidhi Khullar, who was a member of India’s silver-winning 1998 Bangkok Asian Games team. Former Indian men’s team forward and current assistant coach Shivendra Singh tied the knot with former international player Nishi Chauhan.
Former Indian drag-flicker and now a political stalwart, Sandeep Singh also tied the know with international player Harjinder Kaur. Indian men’s hockey team forward Akashdeep Singh got hitched to former Indian women’s team player Monica Malik. Two-time Olympic bronze medallist Mandeep Singh would also hopping on the ‘hockey couple’ bandwagon, as he is getting married to Indian eves’ defender Udita Duhan soon.
