Statistical Talk: India-Pakistan Men Head-to-Head

The Indian men’s hockey team chalked up their 5th consecutive win in the 9th Asian Champions Trophy at Hulunbuir beating arch-rivals Pakistan 2-1. This was by far their toughest engagement in the tournament – it was India’s 66th win in 181 international encounters between the two teams. Both teams had first met on December 6, 1956 at the Melbourne Olympics, where they won 1-0. In 181 head-to-head meetings Pakistan have beaten India 83 times, while 32 games had ended in draws.

India’s hard-fought 2-1 win was a far cry from their last meeting at the at the 2023 Asian Games at Hangzhou, where the Blueshirts hammered the Greenshirts 10-2. India had earlier beaten Pakistan 4-0 at the 2023 Asian Champions Trophy at Chennai. Interestingly, Pakistan had last beaten India a long time ago, winning 2-1 in the pool phase of the 2014 Asian Games at Incheon – a tournament where India won the gold medal beating Pakistan in a shootout in the final. At the 2022 Asia Cup at Jakarta, India had drawn Pakistan 1-1.

There is no denying the fact that the competitive edge in India-Pakistan has substantially dipped with India calling the shots if matches in last seven-eight years are anything to go by.
